Raid?

David this was a good story but I want to know who got raided Thursday.

Some of us still work!

It's November 15th, which means Scott & I (Rita) will be down to Texas in just 30 days.  In the mean time we will continue to go to work every day. :-(  Someone has to work so all our friends can continue to collect their social security and live the good life down in Leisure World.  The road to retirement is getting shorter and shorter.  In fact the end is in sight.  If it were up to Scott we would be spending next winter in Texas, but I have always wanted to teach and live in Alaska.  We have a wonderful opportunity to have the experience of a lifetime and get paid for it.  Life is good! After teaching in Alaska for 2 years our plans are to really retire and live at our cabin in Barnum, Minnesota.  Then, right after deer season and Thanksgiving, we'll head down to Texas for the winter.  Our plans are to stay there until the weather gets nice again in Minnesota.  Once we get to Leisure World for a whole winter we plan to shuffle a lot, work on our tans, play water volleyball, learn to play golf, and hopefully play a bunch of rounds of miniature golf!  Of  course we'll eat our way into oblivion as well as play cards on an incredibly regular basis.  We're looking forward to retirement but it would be nice to stay young too.  Well, that's all for now.  We'll keep you posted on what's happening in the north country if all of you keep us posted about what's happening in Leisure World.  Stay tuned!!!  :-)

How True It Is
Another year has passed and we’re all a little older.
Last summer felt hotter and winter seems much colder.
I rack my brain for happy thoughts to put down on my pad.
But lots of things that come to mind make me kind of sad.
There was a time not long ago when life was quite a blast.
Now I fully understand about living in the past.
We used to go to weddings, football games and lunches,
Now we go to funeral homes, and after funeral brunches.
We used to have hangovers from parties that were gay.
Now we suffer body aches and while the night away.
We used to travel often to places near and far.
Now we get sore bottoms from riding in the car.
We used to go out shopping for new clothing at the Mall.
But, now we never bother.., all the sizes are too small.
We used to go to night clubs and drink a little booze.
Now we stay at home at night and watch the evening news.
That, my friend, is how life is, and now my tale is told.
So, enjoy each day and live it up before you’re too damned oldl

Don Johnk Memorial Shuffleboard Tournament

The Don Johnk Tournament has come to a successful end. After a day of rain delay on Thursday, Friday provided a beautiful south Texas day for the final shuffling. It was a very successful tournament again this year, and we are proud to be able to report that 4 of the trophies were claimed by Leisure World residents! Congratulations are in order for Lorna Bentt and Jack Fisher, who took the 4th place trophy in the Amateurs Main,
and Fran Bell and Dan Foxhoven who earned third place in the Amateurs Consolation Event.
Congratulations, too, to Wally Bentt for all the organization and coordination in producing this tournament, and to Pat LaFoe for the excellent meal service. I'm sure that both Wally and Pat will want to give recognition to their large list of volunteer workers, proving again that Leisure World is the park with the friendliest (and helpful) people.

Out of This World Cherry Pie

I made a couple of these pies for the dinner when we had the Shuffle Board Tournaments and a few ladies asked me for the recipe so thought I would share it with everyone. I originally got this recipe from my good friend, Bev Thompson and have made it several times since she first served it to me.
2 large baked pie crusts. You can use Nilla, Granola, Shortbread or others.
1 (No.2) can of undrained crushed pineapple
1 can cherry pie filling
2(3oz) pkgs. raspberry jello or 1(6oz.) pkg.
3/4 cup of sugar
2 TBL. cornstarch
Add the cornstartch to the undrained pineapple to mix in well, then add the rest of the ingredients. Cook together until it thickens. Cool well. Fold in 6 sliced bananas or less and add 1 Cup of pecans. Pour into pie shells and cover with Cool Whip. This makes two pies.

Illinois/Indiana Breakfast

Once again Bob Clark did an excellent job of organizing the Illinois/Indiana breakfast on November 12, 2008, which was held at the Tierra Santa Golf Club in Weslaco.

There were sixteen in attendance. Non-stop chattering around the table was the first clue that everyone was having a great time of fellowship and we had our own personal coffee pourer.

Our next outing will be December 10, 2008, 8:30 AM, at Victoria Palms. If Bob has not contacted you, make sure you catch up with him and come join your neighbor.

2008-09 Don Johnk Memorial Shuffleboard Tournament

The shuffle courts are busy as the Annual Don Johnk Memorial Suffleboard Tournament got underway this morning. Its very quiet around the courts...just the softspoken report on scoring pucks, the click, click, click as the pucks replace one another in the scoring position.
Leisure World regular Styrl Little's eagle eye settles any questions or disputes. Early this morning he had little to do.


Leisure World Activities Association President, Wally Bentt is the prime mover for this tournament and he's beaming like a proud father this morning.
Our best wishes for high scores and an enjoyable time shuffling for all.

SNOW

It snowed most of the day here but melted as it came down. Wasn't a nice day. Was to get up 34 degrees and am sure it didn't get any warmer than that. There were accidents around here as bridges were slippery. Sounds like more and more people are getting down there. We still plan to leave Iowa the second week of Dec. There is always a snow and ice storm before we leave.

Welcome Back, Scotty

As this photo illustrates, one of our esteemed past presidents of the Leisure World Activities Association has returned to the park from another summer on the road. Funny thing what RVing can do to someone...he was perfectly sane when he left here last Spring!
